New York Youth Symphony...often gets compared to professional
orchestras, and one can hear why. Its music making is alive

have a freshness and a drive that seasoned ensembles are
going to rediscover only very occasionally." |

Ryan McAdams,
Music Director
Ryan McAdams recently completed a Fulbright Fellowship year as Conducting Apprentice of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic under the tutelage of that orchestra's esteemed Music Director (and newly-appointed Music Director of the New York Philharmonic), Alan Gilbert. He assisted both Maestro Gilbert and an array of international visiting guest conductors, most notably during the 2007 Nobel Prize Concert, featuring Renee Fleming. Recent and upcoming engagements include performances with the New Jersey Symphony, the Juilliard Opera Center and the Longy Conservatory. This past spring, Mr. McAdams was invited by Lorin Maazel and the Chataeuville Foundation to serve as the Foundation's first Apprentice Conductor, assisting Maestro Maazel on Britten's "The Rape of Lucretia" at the Maazel Estate in Virginia.
After two summers as an Academy conductor at the Aspen Music Festival, Mr. McAdams was appointed by Maestro David Zinman as his assistant conductor during the Aspen premiere of Ned Rorem's "Our Town." At the conclusion of the 2006 Aspen season, he was nominated by Maestro Zinman and Glimmerglass Opera to become the first-ever recipient of the Aspen Glimmerglass Prize. As a result of the prize, he served as assistant conductor on the 2007 Glimmerglass productions of Philip Glass' "Orphee" and Haydn's "L'Anima del Filosofo." He has also served as cover conductor for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Saint Louis Symphony.
A champion of new music, Ryan McAdams has premiered over twenty works for the Juilliard Composers Concerts series and the New York City Ballet, including the 2005 world premiere of Justine Chen's opera "The Maiden Tower," recently featured at New York City Opera's VOX Festival. He has served as assistant conductor for the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and at Philadelphia's Zellerbach Theater, and was invited to conduct Samei Satoh's "The Last Song" for the Juilliard School's 2006 FOCUS! Festival.
Mr. McAdams was recently chosen as one of 14 candidates to participate in the 2nd Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg, Germany, having been selected out of almost 300 candidates from 40 countries. Last fall, he was named a nominee for the Rolex Mentor-Protege Arts Initiative.
A recent graduate of the Juilliard conducting program, Ryan McAdams has worked with all of the Juilliard orchestral ensembles; highlights include numerous orchestral performances at Alice Tully Hall, a production of Stravinsky's "Histoire du Soldat" with members of the Juilliard Music, Dance and Drama departments in Alice Tully Hall, and a concert performance of Mozart's "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" with members of the Juilliard Opera Center and Orchestra. Mr. McAdams was the first Master's degree candidate accepted into Juilliard by James DePreist, and is a recipient of the Bruno Walter Memorial Scholarship.
