“The orchestra has been a training ground for conductors who have gone on to bigger things.”
          -The New York Times

The world’s finest emerging conductors have found the Symphony’s podium to be an unparalleled opportunity to sharpen their craft, develop their talent, and gain exposure in front of New York's discerning audiences. The Apprentice Conducting Program allows select participants the chance to meet regularly with the orchestra’s Music Director and Assistant Conductor in a season-long course of study which includes:
  • score analysis
  • parts preparation
  • podium time
  • baton and body technique
  • orchestra psychology

  Performance

The podium audition will be a time when the applicants actually conduct the NYYS in a work from the first concert period. It will be the Beethoven Leonore Overture, no. 3. That will take place around the 4th or 5th week of rehearsal.

Selected members of the program will end the season by conducting principal players of the New York Youth Symphony in performances of new works written by members of the Making Score program. This concert will take place on May 6, 2009, at Symphony Space.
