The award-winning New York Youth Symphony announces its 45th season, 2007-08. A season of firsts, the orchestra presents an expanded Durst Début Series, featuring three début artists in commissioned works in Carnegie Hall, and welcomes its new music director, Ryan McAdams. Recognized for its commitment to commissioning music by young composers, the New York Youth Symphony broadens its 24-year-old commissioning program, First Music, to include solo works for three emerging artists and the award-winning 110-member orchestra, in addition to commissions for chamber music, jazz, and chorus.
Conductor Ryan McAdams becomes the New York Youth Symphony’s 15th music director in the 2007-08 season, succeeding Paul Haas. A Fulbright Fellow in 2006-07, Mr. McAdams served as Conducting Apprentice of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic under Music Director Alan Gilbert. He is the first recipient of the Aspen Glimmerglass Prize and was recently selected to participate in the second Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg, Germany. In 2007 Mr. McAdams was also invited by Lorin Maazel and the Chateauville Foundation to be the Foundation’s first apprentice conductor at the Maazel farm in Virginia. A student of James DePreist, Mr. McAdams received his Master’s degree at The Juilliard School and Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University.
The New York Youth Symphony’s three début performances in Carnegie Hall feature violinist William Harvey, mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey, and percussionist James Deitz. The 45th season’s opening performance includes Ravel’s Tzigane with William Harvey and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite on December 9, 2007. On March 16, 2008, the orchestra will delight audiences with Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and selected works by Charles Ives with Kate Lindsey and the Symphony Singers. Svet Stoyanov will join James Deitz for Philip Glass’s Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra on the season’s final performance on May 25, 2008, which also includes Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony.
The New York Youth Symphony has added performance dates to its Jazz Band Classic series in response to last year’s sold-out season. In addition, conductor Vince Lee has been invited to direct the Symphony Singers in its second year. Expanded programs in chamber music, conducting, and composition continue to demonstrate the vibrancy and talent of the New York Youth Symphony’s young musicians. Auditions begin in September for the orchestra, chamber music, conducting, jazz, composition, and choral programs for young musicians ages 12-22. More information can be found online at www.nyys.org.
