Barry Goldberg,
Executive Director

Barry Goldberg is the Senior Vice President of the New York Youth Symphony, Inc., and has served as Executive Director since 1983.

Since that time, the New York Youth Symphony’s budget has grown from $78,500 to $1.2 million. The Endowment-Reserve Funds have increased during that same time from $35,000 to the current $950,000. There were two professional full-time personnel when he was initially engaged; currently, he manages a full-time staff of five, part-time staff of six, and a coaching-teaching program of more than 15. Currently, approximately 240 students are enrolled in the organization’s six programs.

He has served as chair of the Youth Orchestra Division of the American Symphony Orchestra League and currently serves as the Board’s senior adviser. A past participant of Leadership New York, he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Bang on a Can, Inc., of which he is a past president. He serves regularly as a music panelist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Prior to 1983, he worked in management of a variety of arts organizations, including the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, the American Council for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts, where he assisted chairman Kitty Carlisle Hart.

He holds a BA in International Relations from Rhodes College and a Certificate of the Institute for American Universities, Aix-en-Provence, France.
